Vin Naturel

The term “vin naturel” refers to wine made in a low-intervention style, with minimal chemicals and no additives, filtering, or cultured yeasts. The winemaker relies on ambient yeast for fermentation and uses only the smallest trace of added sulfites, if any. Because natural wines are often unfiltered, they can be somewhat cloudy in appearance or contain sediment. One of the defining characteristics of natural wine is its lack of homogenization (which is often prioritized in mass produced, high-intervention wine). Because preservatives aren’t used, natural wine can often express subtle differences between bottles of the same producer and vintage.

NB: All natural wines are organic (from grapes farmed without the use of artificial chemical fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides, and herbicides), but not all organic wines would be considered natural.
